Common Paving Questions

Why Should I Choose Asphalt Pavement for My Paving Needs?

The condition of your driveway, roadway, or parking lot is the first thing people will see and notice about your property. A well-paved and pothole-free driving surface lets your visitors know you're concerned about appearance. It also lets them know you care about their safety and the safety of their vehicle.

Historically, asphalt has been proven to be the best paving material. Cost-wise, asphalt provides excellent performance equal to or better than other more expensive options. Another benefit is the many options available to you through different mix design. Asphalt product type and mix design is unique to each paving project and will be determined by one of our asphalt paving professionals. An inspection of the site will indicate the best match for the expected usage of the pavement. With most new commercial and municipal sites, the specification for the material is provided by the engineering firm or architect.

Can New Asphalt Be Installed Over Our Existing Pavement?

Overlay / Leveling Coat

It's best to think of an overlay as a large patching job over the old asphalt. An asphalt overlay would typically be used when the existing pavement shows signs of potholes and cracking, but the underlying subbase is still structurally firm and uncompromised.

New Installation

A new beginning for your pavement. The installation of a brand new asphalt pavement typically follows this process.

1: Demolition and Removal - This begins with removing the existing surface, whatever that might be, and then disposing of it at the proper sites in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

2: Sloping and Grading - Before installing any material, the surface must be graded; doing this will allow water to drain away from the pavement. The area may need to be re-shaped to allow a sloping surface to help divert water away.

3: Installing the Subbase - The subbase plays a significant role in constructing a roadway, parking lot, or driveway. The subbase is the backbone of your paved area; it's what gives the driving surface its strength and integrity. No matter how good the pavement on the surface is, it's only as strong as the Sub Base underneath.

4: Installing the Binder Layer ( Base Coat ) The binder layer, also called base asphalt, is a larger aggregate mixed with oil, making it strong and durable. The binder layer is a load-bearing course. In addition to having the strength to bear the anticipated traffic load, the binder must also have the ability to withstand seasonal changes in the temperature.

Much like the subbase, the depth of the binder layer depends on the use of the pavement.

5: Installing the New Asphalt Surface ( Surface Coat )  The new asphalt will be laid out with an asphalt paver. Once the new asphalt has been paved, it will then get compacted and smoothed.
